Presentational Skills
Part of our training hones in on everything you might expect by way of the key presentational skills needed to create confident, clear and engaging communication – whether one on one or to a group of people. This includes:
Voice technique – breath support, projection, clarity of speech
Physical presence – posture, grounding, and body language
Delivery techniques – pacing, pause, vocal variety, audience engagement
Confidence tools – managing nerves and presenting with authority
But what else do we do and what makes our coaching different?
An actor’s perspective and the power of authentic self expression + human connection
Actors are some of the most resilient people around, having no choice but to develop the ability to be knocked back again and again and still show up to bear our souls to world. I think there's something to be said for why actors are the best public speakers (aside from the obvious). We are less scared about 'making a fool of ourselves' compared to non-actors 1. because we've tripped up, made mistakes, been rejected and made a fool of ourselves in front of people too many times to count 2. We have an integrated sense of playfulness in our communication
Teaching the skills of an actor’s playfulness and resilience
Part of our approach here at Empowered Expression Coaching is in gifting this sense of social resilience and playfulness to non-actors who want to become better communicators in their own world and profession. The key is in taking the work seriously but in not taking yourself too seriously.
That's what some of the best public speakers have - a conviction in what they are saying but a lightness with the way that they carry themselves. Being so afraid of messing up is what keeps most adults who are scared of public speaking from attempting it or feeling that they can get better at it.
How?
The work we do involves using a variety of improv and creativity exercises to actively encourage creative risk taking and messing up in front of people to grow more of a desensitisation to this. It also helps participants learn how present confidently, engagingly and powerfully within their human authenticity - which means they do NOT need to be perfect. We teach people that your humanness is not something to be fixed, pushed down or gotten rid of to be a great speaker. It is in fact the superpower that fuels the authentic human connection needed to create the biggest impact on your audience.
Why?
Because yes - people respond to confident, self-assured and authoritative energy, so cultivating the ability to present as this is very important and a big part of what we help develop. But what creates the differentiation of the best of the best are those who can also bring to the table: a humanness - heart, a sense of authenticity in how they express themselves – regardless of what it is that is needing to be communicated.
By drawing on a range of improv and acting based exercises we are also helping participants to:
Be present and think on their feet
Communicate clearly under pressure
Not only build up a resilience to ‘messing up’ but learn how to handle it
Master the art of embodying a persona – so that they can learn to ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ should they need to whilst doing the more transformational long term work (if training circumstances allow)
Mindset Work
Where suitable and when we have the opportunity to, our coaching taps into techniques that work on building confidence from the inside out, not just the outside in.
The use of mindset work and mindset tools are a big part of our approach because the mind can be a powerful ally or it can be a powerful enemy – it’s all about the awareness you have of its impact on you and the intentionality with which programme your mind for success. Examples of mindset tools we use are:
Identifying blocks and limiting beliefs about yourself in relation to public speaking that may be holding you back and creating fear and a lack of confidence.
Creating a new belief system that fosters the public speaker / communicator you want to (and have the potential) to be - through subconscious mind rewiring practises such as meditation, affirmations & visualization. (This part of the work Is taught in training but requires participants to integrate these habits into their daily lifes for full affect).
Using visualization (mental rehearsal) as a powerful tool to prep your mind and body for successful execution and the managing of nerves
